8-Hour Private Tour of the Pyramids, Sphinx, Grand Egyptian Museum

9 days

Moderate

Overview

Nine days that move from the pyramids to the Nile to the Red Sea — without rushing any of them. You start in Cairo with the monuments that define Egypt: the Giza Plateau, the Great Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Then you fly south to Aswan and board a private Nile cruise that carries you downstream through Kom Ombo, Edfu, and into Luxor — three nights on the river with every temple visited at the right hour, explained by a guide who knows the stories behind the stone. You disembark in Luxor after the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, then drive east to Hurghada for two nights of Red Sea coastline before your departure.

The pacing is deliberate. Cairo gets enough time to breathe. The cruise handles the logistics between Aswan and Luxor, so you never pack a bag mid-journey. And Hurghada arrives when you need it most — after six days of ancient history, the sea feels earned.

Highlights

  • Stand inside the Giza Pyramid complex with a private Egyptologist — no group crowds, no time pressure
  • Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest archaeological museum ever built, with a guide who can navigate the 100,000+ artifacts with purpose
  • Fly directly to Aswan and board your Nile cruise the same afternoon — no wasted transfer days
  • Three nights sailing downstream through the Nile Valley, waking up at a different temple each morning
  • Walk the Valley of the Kings with a guide who explains which tombs to enter and why — not just the famous ones
  • Stand inside Karnak Temple during the golden hour when the hypostyle hall catches the light at its best
  • Finish with two full days on the Red Sea — snorkeling, diving, or simply doing nothing after a week of history

Who Is This Tour For

This tour works best for first-time visitors to Egypt who want the essential experience — pyramids, Nile cruise, temples, and beach — without the logistics headache of planning it themselves. It's designed for couples, friends traveling together, and small families with older children who can handle full days of touring.

It's not the right fit if you want deep-dive time in every site (the 12- or 14-day tours give you that), if you prefer a land-only itinerary with no cruise, or if your main interest is the Red Sea — two nights in Hurghada are a taste, not a dive holiday.

The pace is moderate: expect 6–8 hours of guided sightseeing on touring days, with built-in breaks. Cruise days include morning temple visits and free afternoons on the sundeck. Hurghada days are entirely yours.

What Makes This Tour Different

The sequencing is intentional. Cairo first, because the Grand Egyptian Museum gives you the context to understand everything you'll see in the south. Then, Aswan before Luxor — you sail downstream with the current, arriving at each temple complex in chronological order. Most operators run Luxor first because it's cheaper to arrange. We run it in the order that makes the history make sense.

The cruise does the work. Between Aswan and Luxor, you don't check out of hotels, pack bags, or sit in transfer vehicles. The boat moves at night. You wake up, walk off the gangplank, and you're at the next temple. Three days of sightseeing with zero logistics.

Hurghada is a decompression, not an afterthought. We deliberately schedule it at the end. After six days of temples and tombs, most travelers need a day where the only decision is whether to swim before or after lunch. Two nights give you one full free day, plus easy morning access before your departure.

Your guide is an Egyptologist, not a tour leader. Licensed, university-trained, and assigned to you for the entire trip. Same face from the pyramids to Karnak. They know your pace, your interests, and which tombs are worth the extra ticket by day three.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive Cairo

Your driver meets you at Cairo International Airport with a sign bearing your name. No queues, no taxi negotiation — the car is waiting, and the hotel is expecting you. Check into your 5-star Cairo hotel (Giza Pyramids area or Nile-view, depending on availability). The rest of the day is yours to settle in. If you arrive early, your guide can suggest a route for your first view of the pyramids at sunset.

Overnight: 5-star Cairo hotel (breakfast included)

Day 2 — Giza Pyramids, Sphinx & Grand Egyptian Museum

Your Egyptologist picks you up after breakfast for a full day on the Giza Plateau. You'll start at the Great Pyramid of Khufu, move to the Pyramid of Khafre, then walk to the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple — your guide controls the route and timing to avoid the densest crowds.

After a lunch break, you visit the Grand Egyptian Museum. This is not a quick walk-through — your guide selects the galleries that matter most based on what you're about to see in Luxor and Aswan, including the Tutankhamun collection and the Royal Mummies hall.

Return to your hotel by late afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast at the hotel, lunch included. Key sites: Giza Pyramids, Great Sphinx, Valley Temple, Grand Egyptian Museum. Overnight: 5-star Cairo hotel

Day 3 — Free Day in Cairo (Optional Tours Available)

This day is unscheduled by design. Some travelers want to rest before the flight south. Others want to see more. Optional tours available (booked separately):

  • Saqqara, Memphis & Dahshur — the Step Pyramid, the Bent Pyramid, and the oldest royal burial ground in Egypt
  • Citadel, Old Cairo & Khan El Khalili — Islamic Cairo, the Alabaster Mosque, Coptic churches, and the medieval bazaar
  • Pyramids Sound & Light Show — evening performance at the Giza Plateau

Your guide can advise which option best complements what you've already seen.

Meals: Breakfast at hotel Overnight: 5-star Cairo hotel

Day 4 — Fly to Aswan · Philae Temple · High Dam · Board Nile Cruise

Early morning flight from Cairo to Aswan (approximately 1.5 hours). Your Aswan guide meets you at the airport and takes you directly to the sites:

Aswan High Dam — a quick stop to understand the engineering that created Lake Nasser and reshaped modern Egypt.

Philae Temple — a short motorboat ride to Agilkia Island, where the temple of Isis was relocated block by block to save it from the rising waters. Your guide explains the rescue operation and the goddess mythology carved into the walls.

Unfinished Obelisk — the largest known ancient obelisk, abandoned in the quarry when a crack appeared. Your guide shows you the tool marks and explains ancient stone-cutting techniques.

Board your 5-star Nile cruise in the late afternoon. Settle into your cabin, explore the sundeck, and watch your first Nile sunset from the water.

Meals: Breakfast at the hotel, lunch, and dinner on the cruise. Key sites: High Dam, Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk. Overnight: 5-star Nile cruise (Aswan)

Day 5 — Kom Ombo & Edfu Temples (Sailing Day)

The cruise departs Aswan in the early morning, sailing downstream through the Nile Valley.

Kom Ombo Temple — mid-morning stop at the unusual double temple dedicated to both Sobek (the crocodile god) and Horus the Elder. Your guide walks you through the symmetrical twin layout and the ancient medical instruments carved into the outer corridor.

Continue sailing to Edfu.

Edfu Temple (Temple of Horus) — the best-preserved temple in Egypt. A short horse carriage ride from the dock brings you to the entrance. Your guide takes you through the massive pylon gateway, the hypostyle hall, and into the inner sanctuary where the granite shrine of Horus still stands.

Return to the cruise for lunch. The afternoon is free — sundeck, pool, or simply watching the Nile banks pass. The cruise sails toward Luxor overnight.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner on the cruise. Key sites: Kom Ombo Temple, Edfu Temple (Temple of Horus). Overnight: 5-star Nile cruise (sailing toward Luxor)

Day 6 — Luxor West Bank: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi

The cruise docks at Luxor early in the morning. Your guide takes you to the West Bank — the ancient royal burial ground on the far side of the Nile.

Valley of the Kings — your general entry includes three tombs. Your Egyptologist selects the best ones open that day based on condition, crowds, and artistic quality. (Optional: upgrade to Tutankhamun's tomb or the spectacular Seti I tomb for an additional fee.)

Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari) — the terraced mortuary temple of Egypt's most powerful female pharaoh, carved into the cliff face. Your guide explains how Hatshepsut ruled as king for 20 years and what happened to her legacy after her death.

Colossi of Memnon — a brief photo stop at the two massive seated statues that once guarded a now-vanished temple.

Return to the cruise for lunch and a free afternoon. Optional: Luxor East Bank evening walk to see Luxor Temple illuminated at night (on your own or with a guide, additional fee).

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner on the cruise. Key sites: Valley of the Kings (3 tombs), Temple of Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon. Overnight: 5-star Nile cruise (Luxor)

Day 7 — Karnak Temple · Transfer to Hurghada

Morning visit to the East Bank before you leave Luxor.

Karnak Temple Complex — the largest religious structure ever built. Your guide walks you through the Great Hypostyle Hall (134 columns, each taller than a 7-story building), the Sacred Lake, the obelisks of Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, and the hidden chapels most visitors walk past without noticing.

Disembark the cruise after the visit. Your private vehicle drives you east across the desert to Hurghada (approximately 3.5–4 hours). The road crosses the Eastern Desert between the Nile Valley and the Red Sea coast — a landscape shift from green riverbank to open desert to turquoise coastline.

Check into your 5-star Hurghada resort. The rest of the evening is yours.

Meals: Breakfast on the cruise, lunch included en route.

Key sites: Karnak Temple Complex. Overnight: 5-star Hurghada resort (breakfast included)

Day 8 — Hurghada Free Day

No guide. No schedule. No alarm. This day is entirely yours.

Your resort sits on the Red Sea coast with direct beach access. Options depending on your interests:

  • Snorkeling or diving — Hurghada's coral reefs are among the best in the Red Sea. Your hotel can arrange half-day snorkeling boat trips or PADI diving excursions.
  • Beach and pool — the simplest option and often the best after a week of touring.
  • Optional: Desert safari — a half-day quad bike or jeep excursion to a Bedouin village in the Eastern Desert (booked separately).
  • Optional: Glass-bottom boat — see the coral without getting wet.

Meals: Breakfast at resort Overnight: 5-star Hurghada resort

Day 9 — Departure

Transfer to Hurghada International Airport for your departure flight. Timing depends on your flight schedule — your driver adjusts accordingly.

If you're flying via Cairo, domestic connections are frequent (approximately 1 hour). If departing from Hurghada for international travel, direct flights serve major European cities.

Meals: Breakfast at the resort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hotels will I stay in?

We use 5-star hotels in each city — specific properties depend on availability for your dates. In Cairo, typical options include the Steigenberger Pyramids, Le Méridien Pyramids, or Hilton Cairo Heliopolis. In Hurghada, options include Steigenberger Al Dau, Hilton Hurghada Resort, or similar. We confirm your exact hotels before final payment. If you have a preference, tell us, and we'll do our best to accommodate it.

What Nile cruise will I be on?

A 5-star cruise sailing from Aswan to Luxor. Specific ship depends on your travel dates — we work with several operators and select based on condition, service standards, and availability. All options include a sundeck pool, restaurant, and private cabins with Nile-view windows. We confirm the ship name before departure.

Can I upgrade to a Dahabiya (traditional sailing boat)?

Yes. Dahabiya cruises are smaller (8–10 cabins vs. 50+ on standard cruises), sail under wind power, and stop at sites that large cruise ships bypass. This is available as an upgrade — contact us for the price difference, which varies by season and availability. The Dahabiya option adds approximately $150–200/night over the standard cruise.

Is the domestic flight included?

Yes. The Cairo-to-Aswan flight is included in the tour price. You don't need to book it separately.

Can I extend my time in Hurghada?

Yes. Additional nights can be added at the resort rate. Tell us how many extra nights you'd like when booking, and we'll include them in your package.

What if I want to start or end in a different city?

The tour can be adjusted. If you're arriving in Luxor or departing from Cairo instead of Hurghada, we can rearrange the logistics. Contact us with your preferred routing, and we'll provide an adjusted itinerary and price.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes, for children approximately age 8 and above who can handle full-day sightseeing. Younger children may find the touring days long, particularly the Valley of the Kings and Karnak. Hurghada days are easy for all ages. Children 2–11 receive a 25% discount when sharing their parents' room.

How physically demanding is this tour?

Moderate. Touring days involve 3–5 hours of walking on uneven ground, sometimes in heat. The Giza Plateau, Valley of the Kings, and Karnak all require significant walking. The cruise days and Hurghada days provide rest. We recommend comfortable shoes and sun protection.

Eligible nationalities include USA, Canada, EU, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. The process takes approximately 15–30 minutes. Your airport meet & greet assistant helps you through the visa queue on arrival. Check your specific nationality's requirements before travel at the Egyptian e-Visa portal (visa2egypt.gov.eg) — some nationalities must apply in advance.

If your flight is delayed, we track it — your driver adjusts. If you cannot find your driver, contact us on WhatsApp immediately (our support line is monitored 24/7 during your trip).

Domestic Flights All domestic flights listed in your itinerary are included and booked by us. You receive e-tickets in your final itinerary. What You'll Pay On-Site All entry fees listed in the itinerary are included and handled by your guide. Optional upgrades — such as the Tutankhamun tomb ($15), the Seti I tomb ($45), the Great Pyramid interior ($31), or Sound & Light shows — are paid on-site by credit or debit card. Your guide advises whether each upgrade is worthwhile before you decide. Cash is no longer accepted at most major sites.

Meals Breakfast is included daily at your hotel. Lunch is included on all touring days. Dinners are not included (except on Nile cruise nights — see ⛵ below). Your guide recommends restaurants each evening based on your preferences and location. Expect $15–30 per person for a good dinner in Cairo, Luxor, or Aswan.

If your package includes a Nile cruise: All meals on board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are included. Alcoholic beverages on the cruise are not included and are purchased separately from the ship's bar.

Weather & Sun Egypt is hot and dry for most of the year. Peak season (October–April) is the most comfortable: 18–28°C (65–82°F) during the day, cool evenings. Low season (May–September) brings intense heat: 35–45°C (95–113°F) at open-air sites. Aswan and Luxor are consistently hotter than Cairo. Your guide adjusts timing to avoid the worst midday heat. Sun protection is essential year-round.

Dress Code Dress comfortably and modestly. At mosques, shoulders and knees must be covered (all genders). At archaeological sites, there is no formal dress code, but lightweight long sleeves and long trousers are practical for both sun protection and cultural respect. Comfortable closed-toe shoes with good grip are essential — you will walk on sand, uneven stone, and rough terrain across multiple sites.

Photography Photography is permitted at most outdoor sites. Inside tombs, photography is generally prohibited unless you purchase a photography ticket. Inside the Grand Egyptian Museum, rules vary by gallery. Drone photography requires permits that are extremely difficult to obtain — do not fly a drone without confirmed authorization.

Payments & Currency Egypt's currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). Credit/debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, museums, and restaurants. ATMs are available in all cities on your itinerary. Your guide and driver accept tips in EGP, USD, or EUR. Recommended tipping: $10–15 per person per day for your guide, $5 per day for your driver.

Health & Safety Drink only bottled water (provided daily on your tour). Tap water is not safe for tourists. Bring any personal medications — pharmacies exist but may not stock your specific brands. Sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, and a small daypack are your most useful daily items. Travel insurance is required and not provided by Pyramids Land — we recommend coverage for trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and evacuation.

Communication Your guide is reachable by WhatsApp throughout your trip. Our support line is monitored 24/7 during your travel dates. Wi-Fi is available at all hotels and on Nile cruise ships. If you need a local SIM card or eSIM, your guide can help you arrange one on arrival — Egyptian eSIMs cost approximately $10–15 for a week of data.

Cultural Notes Egyptians are genuinely welcoming. Basic Arabic — "Shukran" (thank you), "Salaam alaikum" (peace be upon you) — is appreciated. At tourist sites, you may be approached by vendors or people offering unsolicited assistance. Your guide manages these interactions. Bargaining is expected at markets (Khan el-Khalili, Aswan souk) but not at shops with fixed prices. Your guide advises.

        What to bring

Daily essentials (carry with you each touring day):

          • Sunscreen (SPF 30+ minimum — reapply every 2 hours at outdoor sites)
          • Sunglasses
          • Camera or smartphone (plus charger — charge every night at your hotel)
          • Light scarf or shawl for mosque visits
          • Small daypack for water, camera, sunscreen, and a light layer
          • Any personal medications

          For the trip:

          • Passport (valid for at least 6 months from entry date) — required for domestic flights, hotel check-ins, and visa on arrival
          • Travel insurance documents (digital or printed)
          • Comfortable evening clothes for dinners (smart casual — no dress code at most Egyptian restaurants)
          • A light jacket or sweater for air-conditioned vehicles, hotels, and cool evenings (October–March)
          • Layers for early morning departures (Abu Simbel at 3 AM can be cold even in Egypt)
          • Swimwear if your package includes Hurghada, Sharm, or a Nile cruise with a sundeck pool
          • Power adapter — Egypt uses Type C (European 2-pin) outlets, 220V. Most hotels have universal outlets, but carry an adapter as backup.

We provide bottled water daily throughout your trip. You do not need to bring your own.

Explore the tours above. Read the details. Ask questions if needed. Book only when it feels right.

          How pricing works

          Prices are based on:

          • Group size
          • Duration
          • Inclusions listed on the tour page

You will always know what is included before booking. There are no surprise additions.
